Understanding the Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is an extremely popular rule in photography, well it’s perhaps more of a guideline and it relates to achieving eye-catching composition. With the rule of thirds you should essentially imagine a grid of 3 by 3, and you then use this imaginary grid to shoot a photo of your subject.

With the rule of thirds the subject should not be placed in the dead centre. They should be either to the left or right of the image in one first thirds from the left or the right, and the subject should look into the background which is likely to be the remaining thirds.

The grid can then be used the other way round, and for landscape shots the foreground which is perhaps the sand should be the lower third. The subject which may be the sea will be the second thirds, while the background; the sky, will be the final third. That way you have balance in your photography, and this little post is just a quick guide, it can be used in all kinds of photographic situations.
